Rockstar Games has set November 19, 2026 as the release date for Grand Theft Auto VI. Here is what has been confirmed about editions, pricing, pre-loading, platforms and the game itself.
Rockstar Games has locked in a November 19, 2026 release date for Grand Theft Auto VI, ending more than a decade of speculation over when the most anticipated video game in the industry's history would finally arrive. The date, confirmed after two public delays, places the game squarely in the heart of the autumn release calendar.
A date that reshaped the schedule
The first trailer carried a vague 2025 window; a second pointed to May 26, 2026. Both slipped, and the studio ultimately settled on November 19. According to reporting from SVG and IGN, the moment Rockstar published that date, most publishers cleared out of November entirely — a sign of how much commercial space the game is expected to occupy. Nintendo is among the few exceptions, having scheduled its remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the same month.
The gravitational pull is already visible. Cloud Imperium Games has pushed its single-player title Squadron 42 to 2027, and multiple studios have shifted or reaffirmed release windows to avoid overlapping with the launch.
What players get on day one
Rockstar has confirmed three editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles:
- A standard digital release and a disc-less "physical" edition — a case containing a download code — both priced at $79.99.
- An Ultimate Edition priced at $99.99, bundling the base game with in-game content.
- Players who buy the $79.99 versions can upgrade to the Ultimate Edition for the $20 difference at any time.
Pre-loading begins November 12, a week ahead of launch. The download size has not been confirmed; estimates range from roughly 150GB to figures far higher, though most reasonable speculation clusters around 200–300GB.
No PC version has been announced for launch. A PC port is widely expected to follow, but on November 19 the game will be exclusive to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.
An extended look and a soundtrack
In late August, Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a roughly 30-minute preview that debuted first on Netflix. The streaming platform said the footage was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5. IGN journalists who visited Rockstar North for a live gameplay demo described a title built around the small details that make an open world feel like a real place.
The studio has also confirmed a companion record, Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, due November 19 in partnership with Atlantic Records. It is set to feature 34 new tracks, with contributions from artists including Travis Scott, Morgan Wallen and Keith Richards.
What the game itself contains
Rockstar has disclosed a substantial amount of detail in the run-up to launch:
- A large map. Rockstar describes it as "a very big map" and its most complex world to date.
- Two protagonists. The studio considered four leads before settling on a criminal couple, Jason and Lucia.
- An optional romance system. The relationship between the leads is central to the story but not to the mechanics. "Don't bother with it if you aren't," co-studio head Rob Nelson told IGN.
- Returning stats. Weight and muscle attributes return for the first time since GTA: San Andreas.
- A revamped wanted system and an upgraded car-theft mechanic, in which luxury vehicles carry advanced security and electronic keys that must be cloned.
No multiplayer mode has been announced. Given the longevity of GTA Online, a successor is widely anticipated but unconfirmed.
Leaks and caution
The run-up has not been clean. Rockstar suffered a string of gameplay leaks and addressed them publicly, saying it was "heartbreaking" for the team to see unfinished material surface online and warning that some spoilers could affect the intended experience. The studio also faces the pressure of expectations built over more than a decade — pressure its own developers have acknowledged.
For now, the schedule holds. Rockstar has given no indication of a further delay, and prediction markets put the odds of a 2026 release well above 80%. Whether that confidence survives the final two months is the only question left.
